Cairo and Giza: The Pyramids and The Sphinx
We’ll arrive in Cairo and get settled in our historic hotel, where the private balconies have views of the breathtaking Pyramids. After a visit to the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities with our certified Egyptologist, we’ll spend a full day exploring the Giza Plateau, site of the pyramids of Mycerinus and Chephren, and the Great Pyramid, built in the Fourth Dynasty (approximately 2690 BC). We’ll have the opportunity to enter one of these legendary structures, marvelling at the massive stones used to construct them, then we’ll ride camels across the sand to the Great Sphinx, a structure that has captured the imaginations of adventurers for centuries.
Cruising the Nile, from Luxor to Aswan
From Cairo, we’ll fly to Luxor, site of the ancient city of Thebes, and start our first full day of sightseeing with a visit to the striking Luxor Temple, with its towering columns and statues of Ramses II. Then we’ll board the Sanctuary Sun Boat IV, an elegant river cruiser that will be our home on the river for the next four nights
Furnished in a contemporary style with art deco influences, the Sanctuary Sun Boat IV offers 36 standard cabins, two presidential suites and two royal suites. Each spacious ensuite room features air conditioning, a mini bar and LCD television with satellite.
As we wind our way along the Nile, we’ll enjoy incredible meals prepared by an onboard chef. (We’ll even have the chance to prepare some local dishes ourselves during an authentic Chef’s Table experience!) Plus, we’ll be checking out some of the world’s oldest and most awe-inspiring sights:
- The Necropolis of Thebes and Colossi of Memnon
- The architecturally stunning Temple of Hatshepsut, ancient Egypt’s first female pharaoh
- The Valley of the Kings, burial ground of pharaohs and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- The Temple of Karnak, where generations of pharaohs recorded their names
- The Temple of Khnum, renowned for its superb art and hieroglyphics
- The Temple of Horus, built in 230 BC and amazingly well-preserved
Back on land in Cairo, we’ll drive to Sakkara, site of hundreds of tombs and 14 pyramids, including the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser. Then we can choose from one of several optional tours: “Discover Coptic Cairo,” “Discover Islamic Cairo,” or “Relax Aboard a Felucca” (viewing the city from a local’s perspective; sailing in a small craft). To wrap it all up, we’ll gather with our fellow guests for a farewell dinner, reflecting on an incredible journey.
